Coppola and Mars first met in 1999 when the Phoenix frontman contributed to the soundtrack of her second film, The Virgin Suicides.

That same year, the director became married to fellow filmmaker Spike Jonze, with whom she was first romantically connected in 1992.

The former couple would go on to split up five years after they initially tied the knot, and she would use aspects of her former partner's personality for a character in Lost In Translation.

The director went on to become linked to Mars at a certain point after the dissolution of her first marriage, and they went on to make their union official in 2011.

The two later welcomed two daughters named Romy and Cosima, aged 14 and 10, respectively.

Coppola spoke at length about the balance between her role as a parent and her position as a filmmaker during an interview with The Independent, where she noted that becoming a mother changed how she structured her life.

She expressed, 'You start to realize how you have to be more organized with your time. And it's kind of the opposite of an artist, [where] you need to just meander...For anyone creative, it's a definite adjustment.'

The director then elaborated on how her most recent film, On The Rocks, dealt with the compromises that she has made as a mother and the line between her work and her marriage.

The filmmaker specifically noted that she was trying to capture a period of time with her feature, noting that, 'I'm just trying to take where I was at that moment in my life where my kids were younger.'

Coppola is currently set to direct an adaptation of Edith Wharton's 1913 novel The Custom Of The Country.

The forthcoming limited series will follow a girl from the American Midwest who attempts to raise her profile in New York's high society.

The finer details of the project, including casting and a release date, are currently being kept from the public, and it is unknown if the filmmaker will attempt to modernize the story.

Like her last directorial effort, On The Rocks, The Custom Of The Country will be made available on the Apple TV+ streaming service.
