It started out as a crash-pad for struggling comics, but this home above The Comedy Store in Los Angeles became a major part of the stand-up revolution - housing greats from Robin Williams to Jim Carrey in its hey-day.

The notorious 'frat house' above the Sunset Boulevard venue helped launch dozens of careers in the Seventies and sheltered a generation of funny-men. It also played host to parties attended by the likes of Frank Sinatra and Ringo Starr.

Those who wish to own a piece of Hollywood history will be happy to know the four-bedroom home attached to the store is going up for sale - but the $3.3million (£2.65million) price tag is no joke.

The 4,700 sq ft property's glory years in the 1970s and 1980s coincided with a massive comedy boom across the US and the space provided a place for budding comics to hang out, collaborate and party.

It was rolled in with the deal when the ex-wife of comedian Sammy Shore bought the Comedy Store in 1976. She gave the place over to comedians who worked at the venue several years later.

For around a decade, comedians including Williams, Carrey, Sam Kinison, Andrew Dice Clay, Richard Pryor, Yakov Smirnoff and Bill Hicks either lived at the historic address, or frequented the home.

Other comedy greats including David Letterman, Jay Leno, Roseanne Barr and Marc Maron found their voices at the venue and would enjoy the wild parties above the store after their sets.

Built in the 1920s, the property is perched on the hillside directly above a building that once housed Ciro's - a famous nightclub in the 1940s and 1950s which hosted the cream of Hollywood's elite.

Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland were all said to have attended after-hours gatherings at the show-stopping house.

Ciro's later became a rock 'n' roll club called It's Boss. In 1972 comedians Sammy Shore and Rudy DeLuca took over the building and opened The Comedy Store. The store was later taken over by his ex-wife Miz Shore.

The current owner of the Spanish Colonial-style home at 8420 Cresthill Road is record producer Josh Abraham - who has worked with Pink, Carly Rae Jepson, Adam Lambert and Jared Leto's band Thirty Seconds to Mars.

The home, which boasts four bathrooms as well as a private garden and balconies overlooking the Hollywood Hills, has recently been re-modelled.

Listing agent from Compass, Tori Horowitz, said: 'Houses with this kind of pedigree come along once in a lifetime.

'It is a legendary house with an incredible story. Rarely does one get to live between the same walls where major superstars have slept and partied over decades and decades.

'From Frank Sinatra to Marilyn Monroe to Robin Williams and beyond - if only the walls could talk.

'Even without any history, it stands on its own as a classic Hollywood house.

'The vintage details are a reminder that harken back to the Golden Age and the house is updated with modern chic style.

'It truly is a special opportunity for a cosmopolitan buyer who wants to make home in the heart of LA.'
