Did you know that Food Network star Molly Yeh‘s first love was music? The Girl Meets Farm chef originally attended school at Julliard, where she studied percussion. There, she met her husband, Nick Hagen, also a musician. Several years after graduation, Yeh and Hagen relocated to his family’s sugarbeet farm in the midwest, where they planted down roots. They remain there with their growing family, including daughters Bernie and Ira. While cooking, Yeh loves to listen to music. What music does she like to hear while formulating recipes featured on her Food Network series? You’ll be surprised to find out.

Molly Yeh said the transition from Julliard to cooking happened organically.

The Girl Meets Farm star admitted the transition from percussion to cooking and a return to the midwest happened organically.

“I didn’t mean for it to happen,” Yeh told Splendid Table.

“I did not wake up one day and say, “Oh, I think I’d like to move out to a sugar beet farm in Minnesota.” It all happened organically and began after I met my husband at Juilliard. He’s a trombonist. We fell in love and decided to leave New York and go to his farm. It fell into place.”

“After a few years of taking advantage of everything the city offers, I was ready to be back in the Midwest, where I’m from originally,” Yeh continued.

“I was ready to have my own space and have nothing else to do but sit in a kitchen and bake cakes all day, and then it happened. When we were ready to leave New York, Nick’s dad said, ‘What should I plan for with the farm’s future?’ We visited, and I loved it. I loved how flat the land is and how open the skies are. I told Nick, ‘I’m moving back here whether you’re with me or not.'”

You’d be surprised to learn the type of music Molly Yeh listens to while cooking

In an interview for the Food Network website, Yeh shared her eclectic musical tastes.

“I listen to a lot of classical music. I listen to a lot of Sia, Punch Brothers, Chris Daly, Sufjan Stevens, San Fermin, and Lucius,” she claimed.

Yeh also enjoys listening to podcasts and television in the background while she cooked.

“My favorite podcast of all time is called ‘Unorthodox.’ I also listen to Anna Faris’ podcast,” Yeh explained.

Music helps to inspire her creativity

Molly Yeh’s streak in the kitchen is fueled by the music she listens to. These cat cookies are one expressive result.

A love of music runs in her family. Yeh’s father, John Bruce Yeh, is an American clarinetist. He has been the assistant principal and E-flat clarinetist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1977.

Listening to music helps Yeh focus and inspires her as she creates new recipes for her blog and Food Network series.

Some of these creative touches include putting salad on her pizza, which Yeh says gives it “crunch.”

Yeh was also inspired by viewing some embroidery artists on Instagram, which led her to create decorating techniques allowing her cookies to appear to have embroidery.

Girl Meets Farm airs Sundays at 11 a.m. EST on The Food Network.
